Mertie Opal Herron

The Johnson community Northeast of Shawnee, OK lost a lifelong resident of 101 years on Monday, May 3, 2021. Mertie Opal (Knight) Herron lived all her life in the Johnson Community, and at her death, she lived only two miles from her birthplace. She left the Johnson Community and moved to her eternal home in Heaven, the home she had lived for her whole life. Mertie was born to Hope and Sarah Knight on January 29, 1920. She graduated from Centerview High School in 1940 and married Roy Herron on August 1 that same year. Mertie was a charter member of the Johnson Church of God, which was established in 1941 by Rev. W.W. Yoder. She attended faithfully until about a year before her passing. She was an avid student of the Bible, and taught Sunday School for many years. Mertie was a mighty prayer warrior and was called upon by many people for prayer and counsel. Mertie is preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters, 1 brother, and her faithful husband of 51 years. She is also preceded in death by two great grandchildren, Colton Roark, and Kelsey Dibler, and two grandsons-in-law, Bryan Roark and Richard Wolf. She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Merle Dibler, Laura (Hubert) Sales, Phyllis (Larry) Koch, all of Shawnee, and Joyce (Charles) Higgins of Cleveland, TN; eight grandchildren, Tim Dibler, Melanie Searcy, Roxanna Wolf, Christina Roark, Fred Sales, Nathan Higgins, Michael Koch, and Christopher Koch; eleven great grandchildren, and thirteen great, great grandchildren. Family will receive visitors at Walker Funeral Service on Thursday, May 6 from 4-7 pm. Mertie’s immediate family will celebrate her life in a private service on Friday. Mertie will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
