Leslie James "Les" Bishop, a dedicated and hardworking man whose life was marked by commitment, skill, and deep family ties, passed away on May 26, 2026, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Born on August 27, 1958, in Harrah, Oklahoma, Les's journey from his early days demonstrated a tenacious spirit and a love for craftsmanship that defined his personal and professional life.
Les’s career began humbly, sweeping hair at Ron’s Barber Shop as a child before advancing to mowing yards during his high school years to save for his first car—a 1978 Trans Am, reflecting his lifelong passion for automobiles. His education at Horace Mann Elementary School and graduation from Shawnee High School in 1977 laid the foundation for a skill set he expanded at vo-tech, where he learned welding. Early in his career, Les applied his craftsmanship welding water tanks and contributing to the construction of numerous Sonic Drive-Ins. He later worked at Star Building on metal roofing before embarking on a distinguished 36-year tenure in civil service at Tinker Air Force Base beginning in 1986. Les retired as a Sheet Metal Mechanic Work Leader in 2021, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and precision.
Known for his social nature and quick wit, Les stayed connected with his school classmates throughout his life, brightening the lives of those around him. Besides his professional endeavors, Les was "Mr. Fix-it," generously offering his talents to help friends and family with countless projects. His pride in accomplishments extended to his youthful days in the Boy Scouts, where he won a boat contest, reflecting his competitive spirit and determination.
Les met Tami Whitefield at Tinker Air Force Base, and their union was solemnized on July 15, 1990, in Tecumseh. Together, they built a precious family. Les is survived by his loving wife, Tami Bishop, and their children: sons Clint Bishop and wife Kendra, Elijah Bishop and wife Rachel, and daughter Audra Slawson and husband Adam, all residing in Tecumseh. He also cherished his sister, Theresa Henry of Oklahoma City, and took immense pride in his grandchildren: Marcus, Dean, Sam, Heath, Benjamin, Jacob, Evelynn, Michael, Emma, and Jesse.
Les was preceded in death by his parents, James and Eula Mae Bishop, whose memory he held close throughout his life.
Friends and loved ones may pay their respects on Thursday, May 28 and Friday, May 29, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., with the family present to greet friends from 5-7pm Friday at Walker Funeral & Cremation service.
