Shawnee resident Lela Mae Kay McKey, 86, passed away Thursday, March 8, 2018 in McLoud Ok.Lela, the daughter of Thomas Marion and Mary Ann (Briggs) Kay was born May 21, 1931 in Shawnee. She graduated from Shawnee High School. Lela married Charles McKey in Shawnee on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1949. She attended St. Gregory’s University and Oklahoma Baptist University graduating magna cum laude with a degree in education. Lela went to work teaching, a passion that went on for over 30 years, teaching first grade in the Shawnee and Bethel Acres school systems. She was dedicated to her faith and taught numerous students The 23rd Psalm during her teaching career.Lela was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers and four sisters; her husband, Charles; and a daughter, Judy Kay McKey.She is survived by her sister, Mary Ruth Taylor; sons and daughters-in-law, Chuck and Shirley McKey, Rick and Sharon McKey, and Ron and Carol McKey; her daughter, Sheryl Butler; nine grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 8 great great grandchildren; and numerous other family and friends.The family will be at Walker Funeral Service on Sunday from 3pm to 5pm to receive friends. Services will be 2:00 pm Monday, March 12, 2018 at Blackburn Chapel, with Rev. Ron McKey officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Acres Methodist Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Walker Funeral Service.
