Laura Jean Pennock, a beloved member of her community and cherished family matriarch, passed away on September 16, 2025, just shy of her 68th birthday. Born on October 7, 1957, in Pawnee, Oklahoma, Laura was named in honor of her great aunt, Laura (Manatowa) Carter.
Laura dedicated 25 years of her life to working at Firecracker Joe's, where her vibrant presence and strong character touched the lives of many. Known as "Mean Jean," she was outspoken and vivacious, yet her intentions were always grounded in kindness. Her unique personality made her one of a kind, leaving an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of knowing her.
She enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including her love of visiting casinos and playing Bingo in her early years. However, her fondest memories stemmed from her time spent with family, particularly her daughters, her son, and her extensive family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Laura took immense pride in her role as a mother and grandmother, celebrating each milestone and achievement with unparalleled joy.
Laura's upbringings at Acme Schools laid the foundation for her spirited nature. She shared many delightful memories with her family, especially watching her play basketball with her brothers while wearing flip flops—a sight to behold. Her adventurous spirit shone through as she took family trips down dirt roads, sharing ghost stories and spontaneously stopping to light fireworks and drive away—a reminder of her zest for life.
She is survived by her daughters, Stephanie Lasley, Jennifer Lasley, and Patricia Harjo; son, Richard Lasley; 19 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, brother Richard Gene Pennock, along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will all miss her deeply.
Laura was preceded in death by her parents and sisters: Bunny Pennock, Billy Ruth Pennock, Barbara C. Pennock, and Patty A. Harjo, as well as her brothers Raymond Louis Pennock, Robert Jackson Pennock and William Sheridan Pennock.
A wake will be held at the First Indian Baptist Church in Shawnee, Oklahoma, on September 18, 2025, from 5:00 pm. The funeral service will take place the following day, September 19, 2025, at 10:00 am, also at First Indian Baptist Church.
Laura Jean Pennock leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a spirit that will forever live on in the hearts of her family and friends. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for her remarkable life and the profound impact she had on all who knew her.
