Gladys M. Harmon

March 27, 1922 — April 8, 2021

Gladys Harmon of Shawnee, Oklahoma, passed into the arms of her savior on April 8, 2021, at the age of 99. Gladys Maria Swink was born March 27, 1922, to Homer and Ethel Swink, the seventh of eight children. She grew up on the family farm in Bethel Acres and graduated from Shawnee High School in 1940. "Toots", as she was affectionately nicknamed, met the love of her life, E.A. Harmon, Jr. at a rodeo in 1940 and eloped a few short months later. Gladys was employed by Sylvania for many years and later at Federal National Bank, now BancFirst. She made many lifelong friends along the way and loved her days on Main Street in Shawnee as a teller. In retirement, she and E.A. spent many days on Lake Eufaula fishing and relaxing. In addition to fishing, her hobbies included gardening and playing bridge. She cherished every second of her lake time, making enduring memories with family and friends. Ever dedicated to family, she poured into all, instilled faith, and was the guiding light. All knew her as a lively spirit, and powerful woman in her strength and commitment to family, who she loved unconditionally and without pretense. Her power lives on today in the generations of family that carry her forward. Gladys is preceded in death by her parents Ethel and Homer Swink, and siblings, Harold Swink, Helen Fortune, Jack Swink, Bob Swink, Mildred Stewart, Margaret Allen, and Jerry Swink. She is also preceded by her husband of 55 years, E.A. Harmon, Jr., along with her beloved daughters, Helen Richards and Sue McGowan. She is survived by her son, Tommy Harmon (Susan), daughter Debbie Hodde (Rob), 10 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 16, at Walker Funeral Chapel with Phil Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Avonlea Cottage for nine years of dedication and loving care of their mom and granny. Also, their deep gratitude goes to the staff of Heartland Hospice, who provided excellent care at the end of her life. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Gladys by making a donation in her memory to Liberty Baptist Church, 711 E. Federal, Shawnee, Oklahoma, or the charity of your choice.
