George Fred Tyner, Sr., a cherished member of his community and a dedicated family man, passed away on November 4, 2025, in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Born on December 4, 1938, in Rotan, Texas, George lived a life marked by steadfast devotion to both his family and his country.

George's educational journey began at Putnam City High School, where he and his beloved wife, LaWanda, were high school sweethearts. Their enduring love story laid the foundation for a lifetime of memories and shared experiences.

A proud retired veteran, George first served in the National Guard of Oklahoma, then the Air Force and lastly the United States Army for over 20 years. He fought in the Korean War as well as two tours in Vietnam. His military service was one of his proudest accomplishments, reflecting his dedication and commitment to protecting the ideals he held dear.

In addition to his distinguished military career, George lived a life full of adventure, curiosity, and joy. He cherished traveling and camping trips with his family, where hiking, target shooting, and fishing were always favorite activities. A devoted enthusiast of firearms, George especially enjoyed attending gun shows and sharing his knowledge with others. He also had a deep love for dancing with his beloved wife, LaWanda—whether it was square dancing, ballroom, jitterbug, or swing, the two were often found smiling on the dance floor. An avid reader, George found great pleasure in learning from educational literature and escaping into the pages of classic westerns.

George's legacy lives on through his loving family. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Norris of Mustang, Oklahoma; his son, George Tyner Jr. and his wife, Elke, of Missouri; and daughter Stephanie Westlund and her husband, Martin, of Wellston, Oklahoma. He is also survived by his nephew, Sammy Tyner. George was a proud grandfather to Silver Fries, Vanessa Fries, Dustin Fries, Anthony Westlund, and Debbie Downing as well as eight great-grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, LaWanda; his father, George Tyner; his mother, Pansy Wilson; and his sister, Jimmy June Tyner.
