Long time Shawnee, Oklahoma resident, Dorothy Jean (Bolton) Tyler, passed away on November 12, 2025, in Shawnee, Oklahoma. She was 96 years old.
Dorothy was born April 1, 1929, in Oklahoma City, the daughter of Evert Thomas Bolton and Lucy (Carver) Bolton. She lived in Pawnee, Oklahoma with her parents until the stock market crash of 1929, followed by the great depression. Her family moved to an acreage outside Oklahoma City, owned by her aunt and uncle, where they made a living raising poultry and produce. The family moved to Shawnee in 1936 when her father obtained a position as salesman for Standard Coffee Company.
She married Robert "Bob" Allen Tyler on August 28, 1949, in Shawnee. Bob was the love of her life. Dorothy adored him and felt blessed every day of their life together. They were together for 46 years. She said her prayers were answered when she met Bob.
Dorothy graduated from Shawnee High School in 1947, fourth in her class of nearly 400 students. Many of those students were returning servicemen who left school early to serve in WWII.
After high school, she found work as a bookkeeper, secretary, and office manager. Her first jobs were for a local construction company and later Sylvania. Later, Dorothy went to work for Bison Lumber Company for several years before taking a job as office manager at White's Ace Building Center in Shawnee. She worked there for nearly 50 years before retiring at the age of 90. She was proud of the fact that she never applied for a job but was solicited for employment by the companies where she worked.
Dorothy was a lifelong member of Wesley United Methodist Church, serving as an organist and pianist for 17 years. She loved religious music and found immense joy in performing on Sundays. She spent a lot of time playing music at home for her enjoyment, as well.
Faith and devotion to Jesus Christ was a foundation of Dorothy's life. She believed in the power of prayer and blessings associated with living a Christian life. She would always tell others that everything is possible for those whose lives are centered on the Lord and His teachings.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Larry Ray Tyler; one son-in-law, Buford White.
Survivors include one daughter, Linda kay White of Shawnee; one son Paul Allen Tyler and wife, Carol Ann Tyler of Hot Springs, AR; 5 grandchildren, Michelle Nickles and husband, Jimmy of Shawnee; Phillip Tyler and wife, Lisa of Ft.
