Becky Sue Vickrey Garlow, (70), passed away peacefully at home in Shawnee, OK, on May 14, 2025, surrounded by her adoring family. Becky, affectionately known to her family as "Grammy", was born to Norma and Eugene Vickrey on May 20, 1954, in Chickasha, OK.
Becky grew up in the farming community of Minco, OK, with wonderful parents and brothers, and never lost her love for her farming roots. Becky graduated with honors in the Minco high school class of 1972, and in 1976 graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Oklahoma Baptist University.
While a freshman at OBU, Becky met Sam Garlow and they married on August 16, 1974. Becky and Sam made their home in Shawnee, where they have lived since 1977, and celebrated 50 years of wonderful marriage in 2024. Becky was involved in a number of community service organizations and loved her church, First Baptist Church, Shawnee, and later, University Baptist Church, Shawnee. Becky worked with church youth for years and served as sponsor and cook on many youth trips. Becky also loved the First Baptist Church preschool and many Sunday mornings found her working with preschool children. She never met a child she didn't love.
Becky was an incredible wife and mother, and had a great love for her family. Her children and grandchildren were the light of her life and she used her gifts for cooking and baking to her family's delight. Becky took every opportunity for the family to gather - she lived by the slogan "if you cook it, they will come"! Meals at Grammy's house were always the best, usually replete with a table cloth, the good dishes, great food, homemade bread, and always dessert! Her award-winning sewing skills were used to make many a dress or Halloween costume for the kids and grandkids, and she loved to quilt. Becky frequently referred to herself as "Plan B" and was always ready to step in and help whenever her family needed food, a school pick up, child care, a wardrobe repair or alteration, or a special dessert. One of her great joys was shopping for just the right gift for each of her family at each birthday and Christmas.
Becky was a consistent and loyal friend to many, and a mentor for young women who God placed in her life. Becky was a conduit for God's love in His world and her kindness spoke volumes about her essence. Becky had a quietly outsized impact on those who were fortunate enough to be in her sphere and she will be missed greatly by so many.
Becky is survived by her husband, Sam, their children Jeremiah (Heidi), Lauren (Mat), and Timothy (Sarah), and grandchildren, Thatcher (Josephine), Berlin, Anna, Emerson, Ellen, Sammy, and Harrison. Becky was preceded in death by her parents, Norma and Eugene Vickrey, and infant sister, Lorie.
To celebrate Becky's life, a service will be held at Heritage Church of Shawnee, 227 N. Union Street, Shawnee, Oklahoma at 2 pm on Monday, May 19. Family visitation will be at Walker Funeral & Cremation Service, 201 E. 45th Street, Shawnee, from 1-3 pm on Sunday, May 18. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Becky's name to the American Cancer Society, Legacy Parenting of Shawnee, or your favorite charity.
