George “Lindsay” Peters, lifelong resident of Shawnee, died on Friday, May 13, 2016. He was 90 years old. Lindsay is survived by his children, Melanie (Robert) Shurden of Wichita, KS, Debbie Peters of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Sam (Betsy) Peters of Plano, Texas; his sister-in-law Mona Fearheiley of Mt. Carmel, Illinois; five grandchildren, Lynn Mitchell-Parrish (John Parrish), Nicolette Mitchell Bailey (Brendan), Ted Shurden, Bobby Shurden, and Eric Peters; three great-grandchildren, Ryan Bailey, Sophia Parrish, Grace Parrish, and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He is also survived by his beloved care givers, Melanie and Tom Wells. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dee (Daisy Graves) of Princeton, IN; four brothers, Edward Johnson, Jr. of Carruthersville, MO; Thomas Peters of Des Moines, IA; Richard Brazelton Peters of Great Falls, VA and John Carter Peters of Harlingen, TX; and one sister Sarah Katherine (Wilson, Husted) Cole of Atlantic, IA Lindsay was born October 12, 1925 in Shawnee, OK to Edward Johnson Peters of Selma, GA, and Sammie Carter Peters of Bonham, Texas. His father Edward was an architect in Shawnee, designing many prominent homes and buildings in Shawnee and around the state. Lindsay attended the Louisiana Tech University and the University of Oklahoma, graduating with a degree in business administration in 1950. He attended the University of Oklahoma Law School where he was a member of Law Review, graduating in 1953 with a Juris Doctor degree. Lindsay served his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps for 7 years achieving the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He met his wife Dee in San Diego while in the service. He was introduced by a Navy doctor, Orville Graves, MD, who later became his brother-in-law. The couple married, Lindsay retired from the Marine Corps, and they settled in Shawnee where he began his law practice, joining James B. Miller as a partner in the Miller & Peters law firm. In addition to his accomplished career as an attorney, Lindsay was also active in his community. He was active in Boy Scouts for over 30 years of service as a member of the District Governing Board as well as an Examiner for the Citizenship Merit Badge. He was past president and a 50 year member of the Rotary Club. He served as Trustee for the W.P. Wood Trust for over 20 years. He also served on the Board of the Pott. County Health Department, on the Pott. County Hospice Board, and as counsel to the Shawnee Urban Renewal Authority. He and his wife were supporters of the Shawnee Little Theatre, loved to travel, and were interested in gardening. They were both active in the Emmanuel Episcopal Church where Lindsay served as both Jr. and Sr. Warden, and served on several committees within the church. His children remember him as a loving, nurturing man of great intellect, who taught the importance of family. He was a wonderful father who encouraged them in all their endeavors. Lindsay passed away peacefully in his home after a long, distinguished and fulfilling life. He will be remembered as a loving father, a successful attorney, a man of faith, and a contributor to his community. A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. As it was his wish to have laughter and lightness at his funeral, we hope you will have a fond “Lindsay story” to share with us.
